Do you know a little star?

The Children’s Foundation is once again holding the Stars Awards on Thursday 10th July at The Biscuit Factory, Newcastle upon Tyne. The ceremony will be hosted by breakfast legends – Metro Radio’s Steve & Karen.

The Star Award’s aim is to recognise the achievements of children in the North East with a disability, their friends and families, as they face challenges on a daily basis. Every nominee will receive a medal and a certificate to reward their accomplishments. The stories from these North East families raise awareness of important issues surrounding life with a disability. The nominated individuals can live anywhere in the North East.

Last year, Leonnie aged 14, received an award from her keyworker, Amy Howard. Amy said “Leonnie is a very happy bubbly a very happy bubbly young lady with lots of personality. She has Down syndrome and autism as well as a range of other health issues such as dysphagia which means she has all her food blended and drinks thickened, she has also had a number of surgeries including heart surgery. She has recently, unfortunately, lost the sight in one eye and since being young has suffered with reflux.”

Amy, continued, “Due to her learning difficulties and being non-verbal it is very difficult for her to understand and cope with surgery, but she has showed amazing bravery and has amazed doctors with her recovery. Leonnie’s family, friends and keyworkers are all very proud of her.”

The award categories for 2014 are –
1) Child / Young Person (Age groups: 3-18)
2) Friend or Sibling
