Stars Awards 2016

Celebrations were in order this week as The Children’s Foundation hosted their tenth annual Stars Awards at The Biscuit Factory, Newcastle. There were 22 awards handed out by Metro Radio Breakfast Show hosts Steve and Karen at the prestigious awards ceremony.

The Stars Awards aim to recognise the achievements of children living with a disability and those in their life. Award categories were child or young person, friend or sibling and parent or carer and over the years more than 200 Stars Awards have been awarded.

Amongst those receiving an award was Hayley Jackson, mother of three from Seaham. Hayley’s eldest son, Alex, has spent most of his time in and out of hospital. Born with Gastroschisis, Alex’s intestines are on the outside of his body. He has Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) which is intravenous feeding that provides him with all the fluid and essential nutrients he needs. Hayley has had to have special training to access Alex’s central line and to administer TPN 7 nights a week for 13-15 hours. Hayley has also been taught how to administer intravenous antibiotic treatments to Alex which can be quite complex.

Tracey Gotthard, Play specialist at the Great North Children’s Hospital comments, “Hayley is an absolute warrior. Spending so much time in hospital takes its toll, especially when you have to juggle home life and three small children. Hayley never falters or complains and takes it all in her stride. She is a loving, wonderful, caring and compassionate mother who is an absolute credit to her three wonderful children. She deserves to be recognised for the impact she has on all who know and love her.”
