One of the region’s leading children’s charities is set to benefit after the main contractor at Gateshead’s Trinity Square development announced them as their chosen charity for the duration of the build.

Construction specialists Bowmer and Kirkland (B&K) have chosen to support The Children’s Foundation until the project is completed in 2013.

Phil Bates, B&K’s site manager, said: “The Children’s Foundation does outstanding work to help improve the lives of children throughout the North East, and we are delighted to announce them as our chosen charity.

“At peak times we will have over 600 workers here in Gateshead and we will be taking part in a wide variety of fundraising activities, with all the money we raise going directly to the charity.”

Activities already being lined up include charity challenges like the Great North Run, go-karting and competitive golf days.

The Children’s Foundation, based at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary, is dedicated to improving the health, wellbeing and safety of children and young people across the North East.

Libby Nolan, fundraising manager at the charity, said: “We would like to say a big thank you to Bowmer and Kirkland for committing their support to The Children’s Foundation.

“Every penny is important and we wouldn’t be able to keep going without the involvement and generosity of companies like B&K and their employees.”

Gateshead’s £150 million Trinity Square development by Spenhill, the regeneration subsidiary of Tesco will bring more than 1,000 new jobs to Gateshead, the scheme will deliver a vibrant new town square, 45 retail units, 38,000 sq ft of office space, town centre underground parking and a Tesco Extra store, as well as a student village for almost 1,000 Northumbria University students.

A Newcastle father of a little girl suffering from a rare condition is taking part in the world’s first 379 mile marathon along the world’s oldest and deepest lake located in Siberia to raise money for The Children’s Foundation’s Great North Children’s Hospital Appeal.

Most people would be daunted at the prospect of competing in such a colossal marathon at temperatures as low as -40, but Territorial Army lance corporal Dave Gullane, 28, has already served on the frontline in Helmand Province, Afghanistan and is taking it in his stride. The 379 mile race needs to be completed on foot in 14 days or better and Dave is putting himself through a punishing training schedule to make sure he gets the best out of himself.

The devoted father of two who lives in North Shields said: “During two tours in Helmand Province I served alongside some of the most fearsome professional soldiers in the world but when it comes to real bravery no-one has surpassed the courage of my six-year-old daughter Emily. She has cheerfully endured over 100 surgical procedures, spending over 500 hours under anaesthetic as a result of being born with Cloacal Anomaly, an extremely rare and complex condition.”

Emily’s bowel, bladder and kidneys did not form properly and she has already had to have one of her kidneys removed as a result. The condition is so rare that doctors only see one case every five years in the North East and Emily’s condition is the worst they’ve witnessed.

Dave has already raised a substantial figure but is aiming for £5,000 to The Children’s Foundation’s Great North Children’s Hospital Appeal plus costs toward his trip, donations can be made at: http://www.justgiving.com/David-Gullane0

Christmas Wrapping

Once again The Children’s Foundation offered to take some of the stress out of Christmas and teamed up with Eldon Square to offer a Christmas gift wrap service.

From Friday 16th December to Saturday 24th December The Children’s Foundation along with a team of volunteers hosted the gift wrapping stand in Eldon Square making a total of £2298. Thanks to all the companies who donated wrapping paper and all the volunteers that helped out.

Santa’s Letter

Bring a smile to a child’s face this Christmas by completing the application form and sending it back to us by Friday 10th December with a cheque for £3 (per child) and your child will receive a personalised letter from the big man himself.

Application Form

Christmas Greetings Poster

Take the hassle out of sending Christmas cards to your work colleagues and help The Children’s Foundation at the same time by signing up for our Christmas Greetings Poster scheme.

You will receive a Christmas poster for all of your staff to write their messages on in return for a donation. If you would like to receive a Christmas poster please contact nicola.rose2@nuth.nhs.uk

Carol Singing

Throughout December The Children’s Foundation and local schools and choirs sang Christmas carols in Eldon Square, The Bridges Sunderland and the Metro Centre. From 14 different time slots we raised a total of £2155.89. Thanks to all the choirs and schools which were involved as well as all the friends and family that came down to support.

Festive Fundraising

Christmas is the ideal time to get together with friends or work colleagues and raise money for a good cause.

Have a Christmas themed dress down day in the office or a Christmas bake sale and donate the money raised to The Children’s Foundation.

Instead of corporate Christmas cards send an email and donate the money that you would have spent to The Children’s Foundation.

If you would like any further information please contact libby.nolan@nuth.nhs.uk.
